Raven

Cult Couture, 2012

Materials: polyester (fabric from Charles Parsons fabrics)

During the Art Nouveau period (1880) there was great fear of women as they fought back for the right to vote (suffragettes). Women were depicted in paintings, advertisings, art, and sculpture as being a creature. This hybrid creature is referred to as the femme fatal, predatory and dangerous. Raven is a femme fatal, luring her prey with her beauty, to have her way with them.

To construct this garment a corset pattern was manipulated and drafted into this dress. Shoulder pads were added to give the garment a more foreboding look.
